Fire officials report that the wildfire has burned 1100 acres of
land so far and is still spreading.
We have received word from authorities in Crawford County that 4
Mile Road near I-75, just south of Grayling, has been closed because of the
flames and smoke.
I-75 has been shutdown due to visibility issues because of a
forest fire in the area. The fire is reported to be impacting both sides of the
highway and heading north towards Grayling.
Crawford County officials have started evacuating parts of the
southwestern side of Grayling.
We have crews on the scene and will keep you updated as more
information becomes available.

Woodleaf Drive
Karen - my parents house is 1 road over - they have not heard a thing. What I
can gather from bits and pieces is that the fire is going through the woods
behind Karen Woods and towards Hanson Hills/Camp Grayling - no houses so far.

Evergreen/Island Park Area
Can anyone tell me if the area north of M-72 west along the Au Sable
(Evergreen Street just east of the bridge as you head west out of town) is in
danger. Our sister-in-law and her husband have evacuated and I'm trying to let
them know the status in their area. (They lost their home in the 1990 fire!)

Grayling Fire
Beth, I live just down the road from Woodleaf, and as of 8:30 PM, Thursday,
all is well. The subdivision escaped damage.

Correction!
That was RiverView Rd. I was refering to in my last post...sorry

best info source
I've been checking around the web, and this blog seems to be the best source
for info on the fire. The Grayling media market is tiny and has very few local
news people, and no streaming audio that I can find. The Traverse City TV
stations are doing their best, given the distance. Local government is also
small and I suspect everyone involved is simply too busy doing the absolutely
necessary stuff to spend much time sharing the news with the rest of the world
right now. Please continue clearly labeling your info as confirmed or
hearsay.

Websites
The internet is not saying a whole lot, where can I get an update. I have
heard several things from friends but want to know the latest, can anyone
help?
— Amy Johnson, Grayling
Just what we've heard so far
Our mother lives about 8-10 miles NW of Grayling so we've (my brother and I)
been on the phone back and forth the last few hours she was concerned about our
cousin who lives in Grayling. She spoke to the Sherriffs office who told her no
traffic was going into Grayling and many were being evacuated. They are also
concerned about the fire heading down 72 and maybe jumping 72 between the "Ole
Damn Party Store and Riverridge road any new info will be appreciated tons.
still have not heard how fast it may be traveling and is the wind picking up
again in that area...as it is where I am - NE of Kalkaska

I live in Tn but own a house in Karen Woods and would like some information
on what is happening there i have heard several different things and would like

Road Closure update?
Can anyone advise us as to whether any roads are open to travel from the
Roscommon area to the Maple Forest area?
— Pauline Hatfield, Beaver Creek
worried about family in the area
I was wondering if anybody knew how close it is to Riverview Rd.? I have
family in that area and am worried as to how fast it's moving.

Radio updates
Why doesn't the sheriff' department use WUPS radio for updates and evacuation
notices? You can listen to it on your radio, or your computer for people who
have families or property in the area.

Grayling wildfire
The wind was blowing hard frowm the south east when the fire started. We
heard that a train had started the fire along the railroad. And I repeat HEARD.
A train had just passed through town a few minutes before we heard the sirens.
We live ten miles east of town and We are not in the least wqorried about our
home. The fire is moving northeast. Please Pray.
— Lynda Hetrick, Grayling
from what i heard
The Ramada Inn and Admiral gas station was on fire. The fire is on both sides
of the freeway, in case you didnt read in the news story. My mother lives in
sheerwood forest and she left at 4:30 p.m. and I keep calling her back and
forth. They are going to evacuate that too if they havent already because its
really close to 4 mile as well. And its right next to Karen Woods so my guess is
they are evacuating all subdivisions. Pretty soon the whole town will be
evacuated. Clearly. This fire is huge and you can see the flames and smoke from
almost 100 miles away. This is bad news.
— Rachel Greenway, Sterling Heights
Fire
Karen Woods has been evacuated - my parents were given 3 minutes to leave.
The fire is travelling north west through the backwaters (behind Skips) through
Karen Woods and towards M93 (Hanson Hills/Camp Grayling). M72 is closed going
east into town.
— Angela Trager, Cleveland OH
Talked with mom in Grayling
I talked with my mom and she said the town is closed off to anyone coming in.
My brother has been listening to a police scanner and said the fire is both
behind the Glen's store and going towards the industrial park (it split). They
are starting to pump water from the river for use.
Pray for the people who are living in Grayling and those who are trying to
get this under control.

Grayling Fire
Does anyone know if the fire has spread to Manistee River Road just north of
M72?
— Cindy Craanen, Riverview, MI
Karen Woods evacuated
My parents live in Karen Woods - They have been evacuated - had 3 minutes to
leave their house. They have been told it is moving over the country club, up
the back waters and then through the woods towards M72 - it sounds like it is
moving northwest. M72 is now closed; you can't get to town. I heard that the
Holiday Inn is on fire - don't know if this is a fact.
— Angela Trager, Cleveland OH
quick ?
does anyone know if the fire is going to come to gaylord or
Johannesburg,MI?
— nicole b., Johannesburg
Some Updates
I have quite a bit of family in Grayling. We've been on the phone back and
forth for about 3 hours, and here's what I can tell everyone (from what I've
heard): -The fire started North of 4 Mile Road, South of the Industrial Park
(in Grayling), and East of I-75. -The fire headed north and west (towards
town) jumping to the West side of I-75. -If you know Grayling, you know
there is a large swamp just south of town (72 Westbound makes an arc around this
swamp). The fire made it into parts of the swamp and slowed down. -The wind
has died down a ton up there now, so the fire is slowing. -Sharron (sp?)
Woods subdivision was evacuated. -The fire did not burn the Industrial Park.
-The fire has NOT hit Sharron Woods as of 7p.m. -The fire IS burning in
parts of the land owned by the Grayling Gun Club. -I-75 is now semi-open,
but heavy with smoke and soot, so driving is difficult. Hope this helps
everyone.

I've been in contact with my mom, who lives on Stephan Bridge Rd. I was told
that the fire is moving North West. I don't know the speed at which its moving
but the winds are supposedly dying down so it should slow down.

fire
I was wondering if anyone knew how it started and what has it damaged and is
burning now. I heard that k-mart was on fire
— Krista Smith, Lincoln Park
Little worried
We're hearing conflicting stories...is the fire just on the west side of
1-75? We've got a home located 10 miles east (out M72) and we've heard that it's
out of control between 4-5 mile road on the east side.
Can someone tell us if it's headed in the east direction?
— Upset Momma, Down-State
My bit of info...
In answer to the question from Ashley, yes the fire is moving that way, but
it's so far away from Mancelona that it likely won't reach there any time soon.
In answer to the other question, yes that smoke is from the fire, it's predicted
to reach across lake michigan to parts of the Upper Peninsula. My Father lives
in Lakes of the North, near Mancelona and I don't have any worries for him or
his home.
