Hope you all enjoyed a Christmas that brought you joy and peace.
After all those beautiful snow pictures taken on Christmas Day, yesterday was a sloppy drippy depressing spring like day. Fog, Rain, and 49 degrees! Before we retire from Rays Retreat I hope we will experience one holiday week with plenty of snow, and no melt downs! It hasn't happened yet.
Thankfully, we had close to 100 inches of snow! Thankfully, the weather turns very rapidly. Overnight we went from a swimming pool on ice to frozen ice and snow. Love the Michigan quick changing weather.
Even in yesterdays miserable weather we had determined riders out getting drenched. Those are Mike's kind of people. Helped brighten his day a bit..... the raindrops was quitely literally torturing him all day.
Blaine came sliding into Rays Retreat taking out the light pole when he arrived yesterday morning.
The trails are in decent shape today according to many riders. A few slushy spots and Julie's waterhole is a spot to avoid! Not as deep as Julie experienced last year, but still a sizable water hole. Temps are expected to drop down into teens so soon it should be frozen solid. Groomers have been at work today. They were spotted several times by riders.
The high winds early today brought down many power poles and lines leaving many without power. Thankfully, (again, we have much to be thankful for!!) we kept our power. The Big Mac was closed down for the morning hours until the high winds subsided. Many branches and limbs scattered across the yard, and I suspect on the trails too.
More snow is in the forecast thru this week. So, despite the one day meltdown, northern Michigan has recovered. New snow will continue to improve conditions..... and we'll be busy and unable to get out on the trail ourselves.

Winter Storm Warning in effect from 5 am to 5 PM EST Sunday...
The National Weather Service in Gaylord has issued a Winter Storm
Warning for snow and blowing snow... which is in effect from 5 am
to 5 PM EST Sunday. This replaces the previously issued Winter
Storm Watch.
Rain will change rapidly over to snow early Sunday morning... while
winds will become very gusty... reaching 30 to possibly 40 mph. The
greatest snow accumulations on Sunday are most likely to occur
across eastern Upper Michigan where 2 to 5 inches are expected.
Across northwest lower Michigan... only a few inches of snow will
accumulate by the end of the day.
But regardless of accumulations... strong winds will produce
blowing and drifting snow and significantly reduced visibilities
creating a period of near blizzard conditions Sunday morning.
The snow will quickly taper off Sunday afternoon... but winds will
remain gusty.
A Winter Storm Warning for snow and blowing snow means severe
winter weather conditions are expected. Snow and blowing snow
will make travel dangerous. If you must travel... use extreme
caution.

I love the snowbanks! See my tail up there...
See my eyes peeking over the top...
Here I am! Right on top of the largest snowbank.
This was Christmas Day. What a great day, we had fun over at Bourbon's house having Christmas. They had some great snowbanks too. I conquered them all.
Yes, Christmas Day was a much better day than today. ... its rather a miserable day today. Rain, fog, sad, sad...........we're stuck inside pretty much all day listening to rain, and Mike crying. ...

Who ever gets tired of seeing snow pictures? (and if you do, then obviously this blog isn't something you should be reading!)
Is there a car under there? ...
Its just so white, white, everywhere!
Snow piles around the lighthouse on the corner.
Of course snow means shoveling, and plowing.
We got 8 inches of fresh new snow on Christmas Eve.

Recipe for a Happy Christmas
Take the crisp cold of a December night, add two generous parts of snow, stir in air so clear it tinkles.
Into a generous heart, mix the wonder of a little girl, the sparkle of a young boy's glance, the love of parents, and set gently before the chimney side.
Add the lightest touch of a reindeer's hooves, a sprig of holly, a scent of fir.
Set the mixture to rise in the warmth of a dream of good will to men.
It will be almost ready to serve when it bubbles with warmth and good feeling.
Bedeck with the light of a star set in the East, garnish with shining balls of gold, silver and red.
Serve to the tune of an ancient carol in the middle of the family table. This recipe is sufficient for all the men and women you will ever meet.
Merry Christmas!

It was great getting out on the trail even for a shorter ride (45 miles) over thru Lakes of the North for early lunch/late supper at The Settings.
Santa came early and left my pressie. A new coat to match my sled. I'm stylin now.
Mike felt roughed up a little the last little bit of the ride after we passed the groomer (see trail report at sledtheweb ... now under Waters). It really makes a difference on the age of your sled. Mike's boat is a good ride when things are completely flat, but a few bumps and its working him over. He even conceded that even though his boat is handling so much better, a new sled would make riding more fun being able to skip those bumps.
Here I am .. all red.
Trail 4 Lakes of the North
Mancelona roller coaster hills... which now that I've been riding them a few years don't seem all that roller coasty anymore. They're just hills.
You may have noticed (if you went to sledtheweb today, that there is no longer a Gaylord/Waters report, and Gaylord is soon to get a new trail reporter. Wow, that was a surprise to me! and I found out when one of our faithful readers emailed me that he couldn't find us any longer...
We're still there, just all the way to the end of the list as Waters now. As I said, came as a total surprise to us too. Deja vu. ... this happened a few years back.
After responding to a need for a Gaylord trial reporter I started reporting on sledtheweb. Then another Gaylord motel (won't say names but he no longer is in the business) decided to start reporting too, and that Gaylord spot was given to him. At that time, we were put to Waters, but after negotiations was able to have it named Gaylord/Waters. As mentioned, that gentlemen is no longer in the business and was not doing reports for some time, so I have been the lone Gaylord reporter until now. Which is fine, different opinions and reports of different trails are great...........it just doesn't seem very loyal to the first person doing those reports, who has been faithful and reporting on a regular basis to get knocked down to Waters whenever a new reporter pops up. oh well... everyone has their own opinion, and way of seeing things. Guess that's why we live in America. Anyway, if you're looking for our trail report on sledtheweb, then you'll need to go to the Waters report.

Its been a pleasant weekend around Rays Retreat. Complete opposite of last weekend. Everyone here this weekend is just super nice good people.
No rip roaring around at 2 or 3 am. No beer cans scattered. No destruction. This is how we all like it.
Despite the bitter cold its been a weekend of love and romance. We have Joe and Roxanne staying with us celebrating their 12 year anniversary. The roses he had sent for her are beautiful.
This pretty young woman grinning is the very pretty and happy Dawn Marie. He proposed to her outside this morning, while her brother was working on the frozen suspension on her sled. He asked her just after breakfast, a heartwarming -12 degrees. That's our first "will you marry me" at Rays Retraet. The ring is beautiful, just like her.
(and Dan, I thought you might have been our first proposal here..... too late to hold that title now)

Its been a good day for me. Ann was home with us. We had a nice group of people in for a Christmas party this afternoon. They were here a few years ago when I was a puppy... they couldn't believe how big and beautiful I had grown!
Ann and I went outside and roughed around in the snow, even throwing the frisbee. Then the two of us took a walk. It just energized me but she came back worn out complaining about an aerobic workout.
Here I'm keeping Mike company. We like to watch the weather channel together and keep up to date on the weather conditions.

I have copied the newstory from this weeks Gaylord Herald Times regarding the snowmobile accident this past weekend, that took the life of a young man.
A very sad reminder that fun can turn deadly very quickly and unexpectedly. Please drive safely.
